Topic: Do Returnee Managers Bring Overseas Customers?
Presenter:Dongmin Kong, Associate Professor of Finance of Huazhong University of Science and Technology
Abstract:
We investigate effects of returnee talents on the overseas customers of a firm by using two manually collected datasets of managers’ foreign experiences and overseas customers of listed Chinese firms. Results show that: 1) returnee managers significantly improve the probability of having overseas customers and the proportion of sales to overseas customers; 2) the effects of returnees on overseas customers are more pronounced in state-owned firms and more dominated by returnee executives than returnee directors; and 3) both the experiences in the same country with the target exporting country and the national culture of the returnee significantly affect the relationship between returnees and overseas customers. We contribute to the literature on managerial characteristics, firm performance, and the supply chain for international process, and the study also provides clear implications to emerging markets on the policies that attract overseas talents.
