Announcement of the International Conference on Contemporary Management Accounting Xiamen, China 9-10 July 2005 About the Conference This is the 5th annual academic conference on accounting and finance co-organized by the Center for Accounting Studies (CAS) and Department of Accounting, Xiamen University, China. We cordially invite you to attend the conference, which will be held on the main campus of Xiamen University on 9-10 July 2005 in Xiamen, China. About the Location Xiamen, known as international garden city on the sea and successful Special Economic Zone in China, has pleasant weather, clean air, beautiful beaches and gardens, and a unique mixture of traditional Chinese, European colonial and modern architecture. About the Organizers Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by the overseas Chinese leader Tan Kah Kee, and is one of the key universities directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education (MOE) in China. The university has three campuses, which cover a total area of 538 hectares. The 167 hectares main campus is located in the southern part of Xiamen Island, while the Zhangzhou campus covers 171 hectares and the Jimei campus has an area of 200 hectares in picturesque surroundings, with its campus running along the seashore beneath scenic mountains. The university now offers 71 undergraduate programs, 158 postgraduate programs, 95 Ph.D. programs, and post-doctoral research centers established in the 12 first-class disciplines. It also has more than 70 institutes’ set-up to conduct quality research. The university now has a total enrollment of 29,000 full-time students, including 17,847 undergraduates, 8,785 masters’ students, 1,501 doctoral students, and 1,200 overseas students, of whom 426 students come from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. In addition, the university has over 6,000 overseas correspondence students. The Center for Accounting Studies (CAS) was established in January 2000 based on the Accounting Research Institute, Department of Accounting, Xiamen University. The CAS was designated as a national key institute at the end of the year 2000 by MOE. CAS is co-sponsored by the Department of Accounting Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and Xiamen University. It receives annual funding and strict administration from the MOE, and is directly under the administration of Xiamen University. The Department of Accounting is one of the five national key disciplines in Accounting. It was ranked as the top discipline in accounting in China in 2001. Moreover, it has successfully provided undergraduate, master and Ph.D. programs for many decades. Call for Papers The 5th annual academic conference is intended to address a broad range of topics in management accounting. Papers selected for the conference will be those that identify interesting topics, employ appropriate and rigorous research methods to investigate the topics and present the material in an interesting manner. The topics suggested for the conference include the following issues: 1. The history and prospects of management accounting. 2. Studies on the frontiers of contemporary management accounting (such as balanced scorecard, strategic management accounting, accounting of intellectual assets and intellectual capital, activity-based costing and ERP and environmental management accounting). 3.  Enterprise technological innovations and the latest developments of management accounting. 4. Enterprise organizational innovations and the latest developments of management accounting. 5. Enterprise management innovations and the latest developments of management accounting. 6. The technical view vs. the social-cultural view concerning the developments of management accounting. 7. Research on innovation in management accounting in the coming age of the knowledge-based economy. 8. Education for senior management accountants. It should be noted that manuscripts previously published or currently under review by other publications will not be accepted for the conference. All submissions are subject to a double-blind review process by experienced international academic referees. Submission Guidelines Each submission should include a separate title page listing: paper title, author’s name, title and position, affiliation, mailing address and E-mail address. If the paper has more than one author, please indicate the corresponding author. All contacts will be made with that author. An electronic copy in MS WORD format is strongly recommended. The conference will distribute the conference proceedings with full text papers or the abstracts only for the participants with the permit of the authors. The deadline for paper submission is 8 May 2005. Authors will be notified of the results of the review process by 30 May 2005. Submissions should be made in the form of a complete paper.
