演讲题目：Subway Construction, Café Talks, and Innovation

内容提要：

Public infrastructure reshapes the spatial distribution of urban amenities, creating new opportunities for face-to-face interactions. This paper examines how the construction of subway stations in China influences the distribution of cafés and thus, the innovation performance of nearby areas. Using Dianping data from 2013 to 2022, we fine that the density of nearby cafés increases significantly around newly opened subway stations. This growth in cafés, typical third places for knowledge exchange, leads to an 8.26% increase in annual invention applications following subway openings. The effect is particularly pronounced for collaborations among inventors within the same firm, compared to those across different firms. Leveraging smartphone mobility records, we further show that new stations increase both the time inventors spend nearby and the duration of their informal meetings in cafés. Together, these findings suggest that subway stations enhance local innovation output by facilitating amenities to foster face-to-face interaction.

蒙莉娜，厦门大学经济学院与王亚南经济研究院副教授，博士生导师，厦门大学经济研究所副所长。主要研究领域为城市经济学与环境经济学。在《经济研究》《经济学》（季刊），Journal of Development Economics，Regional Science and Urban Economics，The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics等期刊发表多篇论文，多个咨询决策报告获得国务院中央办公厅，教育部及中共福建省委采用，主持国家自然科学基金2项和福建省自然科学基金1项。
